The Best writing software For EBooks

Using Modern Writing Software In The Digital Age

If you’re a writer, you probably have a love affair with words. How do you find the best writing software to fulfill your goals? You also likely spend hours each day writing your novel, short story, poetry collection, or another project.

When you are just using Microsoft Word or Apple Pages, you may get tired of endlessly scrolling through your document. It may be time to upgrade to Pro-level writing software.

So it makes sense that you’d want the best writing software to help with all of this. And as far as book creation goes, there are tons of options out there—from simple word processors like Microsoft Word and Google Docs to full-fledged writing suites like Scrivener and Storyist.

Luckily for us writers everywhere (well not just us but maybe more so us), finding the right software for your own unique needs is easier than ever before:

Subscribe To Our Weekly Newsletter And Other Blogs All About Writing

You can find an endless number of blogs about writing on the internet. So how do you know which one is right for you?

It’s important to subscribe to a blog that speaks directly to your needs, interests and concerns as a writer.

For example, if money is an issue for you in this process then make sure that the site has information about how writers can make money from their work. While I have written, lyrics, poetry, screenplays, and fiction, this blog specifically emphasizes how to transform your words into dollars. I include some marketing insights as well for those into copywriting, email marketing, and writing ads.

Having said that, there are some blogs who also emphasize how to turn creative writing into streams of income. Most importantly, I have plenty of examples here of how to productize your writing by packing it into clear and concise books and ebooks.

The best type of writing software for you all depends on what type of writing you will be doing and how you want to publish it.

If time management is a concern then look for tips on how best to manage your time so that you have more time left over after writing each day.

What you see is normally what you get. If possible, try and read through several posts before subscribing so that way there are no surprises when it comes down to actually reading the content of each post on their site or blog once every week or two depending on how often they post new material!

Make sure whatever blog(s) (there should be at least two) fall under these criteria:

1) Posts regularly

2) Has good quality content

3) Has thematic consistency

4) Contain helpful advice

5) Written by someone who knows what they’re talking about

Consider getting Scrivener and Storyist

If you want to try something fast and effective, and not spend time evaluating, here are two that will help you write. Storyist and Scrivener are two popular writing software options for ebooks, web content, novels, and more.

Both programs offer a word processor-like experience with features like formatting and images, but they’re different enough from one another that you may want to try both before choosing one over the other.

Due to my bias toward using Macs, I personally use Scrivener which is designed specifically for writers and authors.

Scrivener has a lot of helpful organizational tools. You can sort your documents into folders or subfolders; search through your whole project with keywords or phrases; and even set up outlines if you choose (you can see an example below).

I also like that from Scrivener you can select various formats to render your book as a manuscript, Epub (for Mac ibooks), Mobi (for Amazon Kindle), and print-on-demand books. This way you can see the size and how your book will look in different formats.

Storyist is available on Mac OS X or Windows 10 as well as iOS devices like an iPad Pro. While it doesn’t have all the same organizational features as Scrivener does—it’s primarily meant to be used within its own interface rather than alongside third-party tools.

I find its navigation scheme makes it easier to use when writing from my laptop than Scrivener’s does because of the way each document opens up automatically in separate panes so nothing gets crowded onto one screen.

Scrivener writing software has been around since 2006, when it was first created by a writer new to the freelance world. Software was developed as a tool to solve their own writing problems.

This led to the creation of Scrivener for Windows, which has gradually become one of the most popular writing tools for writers around the world.

The program combines many of the most popular, powerful features of word processors, spreadsheets, outlining applications, and project management software – while adding an elegant interface that has quickly made it one of the most popular pieces of writing software available.

One of its most powerful features is arranging sections, chapters, and content by drag and drop folders. It’s now available in Mac OX, Windows, iOS versions.

This program is commonly used by individuals and small businesses to create business proposals, newsletters, resumes, pamphlets, emails, presentations, flyers, greeting cards, calendars and posters among other documents.

There are numerous apps that can be used with the Apple pages including iWork applications such as Numbers, Keynote and Pages. Most people who are familiar with the word processing software Microsoft Word understand how easy it is to complete projects using this application.

But learning to use Apple Pages for document creation may appear to be a daunting task for the first time users. The truth is; the basic layout is quite easy once you start working with it.

Adobe InDesign: Best For Images and Graphics (Image credit: Atavist)

How can Adobe InDesign software help you create ebooks? With its powerful interface, flexible design capabilities and compatibility with third party apps, Adobe InDesign software has become a great choice for creating ebooks for both amateur and professional designers.

Microsoft Word is the class editor many of us have been using for decades. Within Word, you can save your file in .doc, .pdf, and .html formats.

They are also lacking in the area of graphics, modern style, and new graphics. To be fair, Microsoft Word is the most basic. It is easy to use and can help you write a simple ebook quickly.

If you’re writing a short story or a small ebook, you can use Microsoft Word as your starting point, or to organize your ideas. If you are on a budget, you can make do with Microsoft Word, but there are limitations. Microsoft Word is a very useful tool for writing ebooks.

Google Docs (FREE) Free with Google Accounts: Best for digital nomads, and mobile office

Google Docs is a great option for mobile writers, digital nomads, and any authors who want to write, edit and publish an ebook. It’s easy to use, has all of the features you’ll need to write your manuscript and can be accessed anywhere with an internet connection.

When it comes time for publishing your book, there are even more options available such as changing margins and fonts throughout your entire document.

Know what you’re looking for in writing software

When you’re shopping for writing software, it helps to know what you’re looking for.

If you’re trying to decide between Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Pages, and Scrivener, that’s a different question than whether you should pay more for Final Draft or Celtx (for screenwriting).

Here are some things to consider:

  • What is my budget and what am I willing to invest?
  • What do I want my book creation software to do?

  • How much am I willing and able to spend on this tool?
  • Some applications are free; others require payment after a free version period ends. Is money an issue here (and if so, how much)?
  • If the answer is yes, does this price tag fit with your budget?
  • If no—if money isn’t an issue—what other factors might influence your decision-making process when it comes time to buy whatever program(s) you choose (ease of use vs features vs customer support options)?

While many writers have their own preferences when it comes to which desktop publisher they prefer, the following programs are among those considered best by editors at major publications: WordPerfect Office X5 (Windows) or Pages (Mac).

Scrivener is also highly recommended by several prominent authors including Stephen King who uses it as his primary writing tool; this powerful program offers a plethora of features including outliner mode and distraction-free fullscreen mode.
